Mirena

Maybe you can guess by the title what this will be about. I'll (try) to keep it short and sweet. I got the IUD "Mirena" today... (yes, FINALLY. Thats a whole 'nother blog in itself... okay, I know you want to hear it.. Long-story-short - first they rescheduled my 6 week postpartum appointment, then I had to be on antibiotics for a week before they would give me the IUD, then I had to cancel my follow-up appointment because there was no way I could make it, and FINALLY, today, the stars aligned and I am now on BC).

Lets just say I wasn't expecting the process to be... quite, so.... PAINFUL! I am fully convinced after today that women OBs are deliberately NOT as gentle as male OBs... (any hands up in agreement?!). Not only did she not take any time, she didn't "talk me through it" like I had expected, I have no idea what the heck she did... until after she did it.

Maybe not everyone likes to know when they are getting a needle stuck in their cervix, (HELLO!) but I do. I didn't even know I had to get numbed for the process. And on top of the already painful/ increasingly-stressful situation, Ka'imi was pretty much screaming his head off which added to the theatrics! (Of course, he was perfectly fine as soon as someone picked him up. Poor thing just wants to be held!)

...And THE CRAMPING!! Granted, it's been a while since I've been on my ma'i, and maybe the cramping isn't so bad in comparison - but I wasn't prepared to be cramping like that for the whole drive home. As soon as I got home, I popped some Ibueprofen, plugged in my heating pad (just like the good ol' days), put Makoa down for a nap. tried my darndest to get Ka'imi to sleep (but he was content to stay up since he took a little cat nap on the way home)... and TRIED to get some rest. Cramps like those really just ruin my day. Speaking of  which, thinking of all this is reminding me that I about about due for another hit of ibeuprofen (sp?)... I can feel them increasing.

Anyway, I'm happy that this will last until 2013, but I'm pretty sure I will be having it removed sooner than that. HOWEVER - I'm glad to not have to worry about going through 9 months (ish) of pregnancy again anytime soon. Sorry, I'm definitely NOT at the point that I "miss" it - and probably wont be for a while!

For now, I will enjoy the sons I have. And "relish" pregnancy vicariously through my sweet blogger friends. Rock on. Sorry if I scared any of you. But now you know.

so it lasts for five years, how is it kept in there and what was the purpose of the needle? i have tried pills and depo, didn't like the depo but i only had to get it done every 3 months, but it made my cycle very weird. the pills are good, just remembering to take them at the same time every day -- i am a lot more forgetful since becoming a mother. i have heard of some peoples' IUDs getting knocked out of place, is that possible? just curious...

It gets better, trust me. The best BC I've ever had. No cramping, bleeding, nothing! BEautiful thing. But mine didn't hurt getting it in, so maybe your OB really is...unaccomodating. Mine was a guy. Maybe there's truth to the theory. I promise, though, you won't be sorry!

Girl, I just love all your blogs (can't you tell by my frequency of comments? he he). I love how open and honest you are. And I always here that guy docs are more gentle...but I think OBGYN's are just in general less sensitive than family prac. docs. I liked Dr. Wolfgramm, she's super duper nice (and gently :), she does the whole thing where she tells you what she'll do before she does it. Okay, maybe TMI, but when you make the switch from OB to Family Practice, she's my pick. :)

From what I hear, the IUD isn't 100% effective. Including you, I only have 3 friends that have ever had it. And both of the other two got pregnant with it. Just a warning... Sorry about all the cramping. I hope it gets better.

I TOTALLY agree about women OBGYNs. I hate, hate, HATE them!
