Well, looking back it honestly wasn't that bad. I've definitely had worse.
Last month, I misplaced my drivers license. The last time I saw it was when my mom gave it back to me after making a copy of it for the camping permit we had to get to camp at Anini Beach. Megan told me she saw Makoa playing with it on my bed. I have ransacked my room multiple times looking for it. I still have not found it.
I finally decided to look into getting a replacement a few weeks ago. I called the DMV. Because I lost an out of state license, the whole process is a lot more difficult than it would be to just replace a Hawaii one - granted. I need some sort of photo ID (passport, state ID) or else I have to take the road test again (like I'm 16!). I have neither, so that sucks. I'll go ahead and look into what it will take to get a State ID. not too much, just a bunch of documents that I (thanksfully!) have. I print the application form for a State ID off of the internet (such a wonderful resource!) and fill it out... and it just sits the for a few weeks.
DAY 1
One, not so special, morning - my mom is going into Lihue because Tyler's provisional drivers license is ready to be upgraded to a full-on, official drivers license (and Josh and Steph are going to do a little school shopping). I remember that I need a drivers license so I am no longer driving illegally... and ask to come with (plus its way easier to run errands with two babies with that much help!). We get ready quickly, and after about 10 minutes of collecting all the correct documents I'll need - we're off!
I wont go into all the details of how I didn't eat breakfast (as previously noted, not a good thing) and wanted a breakfast sandwhich at McDonalds, and how when we finally got up to order, they told us they're not serving breakfast (*insert frustration here*)... how we dropped off my mom, steph, josh & Makoa at Kukui Grove, and ended up at the DMV with my bro Tyler and baby Ka'imi.
While Tyler is upgrading, I decide to talk to someone at the counter again, just to clarify the process. Yes, I need some sort of official photo ID or else I have to take the road test. Okay, so where do I get the State ID? Wanamuli Building, room 105? (No, really. That's what I heard.) OKay - lets go find it. After driving around for a few minutes with my ever-patient brother and sleeping (thank goodness) baby - we find the place we're looking for... but that's the social security office. UGH! The nice security guard explains that I need to go to the State? County building? I dont remember... so I stop at the county building... NOPE! Wrong one... okay. The state building. Got it.
I find the room to get my State ID. The lady is nice. I have all my documents. It goes pretty smoothly. GOT it. The picture looks like crap, but who cares.
We go BACK to the DMV... WAIT in line (the people are sweet, but they move ridiculously SLOWLY!) finally sit with someone. I have all the things I need...(so we thought. Oh yes, the story keep getting better!) so the guy gives me the book to study. HOWEVER- Because I have an out-of-state license, it needs to be canceled in order to get a Hawaii one. But because I LOST it (or Makoa did, or whatever!), I don't know my license number. While I', studying, he's searching and searching in the database, but can't find me anywhere! He asks his supervisor why he can't find my number and we learn its because I'm "probably a good driver" and I "probably have a clean driving record." Now, if I had some sort of history - they would have been able to find my Utah license number. There's nothing more they can do without that number. I try to remember who might have the number... my mom gave a copy of it to the County for the camping permit... they tell me to contact Parks and Recreation to get the number. You're kidding me. By this point, and after all these hours, I just want a stupid license. I guess we'll have to save that for another day.
So, I have my State ID. Now I need my Utah licence #. I figure I'll just look into getting a new Utah Licence, but after some quick research on the internet, I learn that it has to be done in person. - WELL THAT WONT WORK!
After letting my mom know the status of it all.... and adding some "fricks" and "dumbs" and "UGHS"... she tells me that she HAS a copy of my license. Oh. Well, that makes me feel a whole lot better. I guess that'll work.
DAY 2
Yesterday, my sister, Megan and I were really bored and wanted to get out of the house. Shopping (well, Kukui Grove, atleast) sounded good. HEY! Why we're in Lihue, I should take the written test so I can get my Drivers License - it shouldn't take that long since I have my Utah License #. In fact! I have a copy of my license. Sure.
Megan waits in the van with Makoa and Ka'imi. TWO HOURS LATER, Stephanie comes into the DMV to see what the heck is taking so long...I'm just about to have my picture taken... for my Drivers PERMIT! YES! I SAID PERMIT. I HAVE A FREAKING DRIVER PERMIT!!!
Let's go back 2 hours, shall we.
Now, I have all the appropriate documents, so I study for the written exam for about 45 minutes (I didn't know that the hitch has to hold 10-15% of a trailers weight.... so what else didn't I know?!?!). After taking the 30 question exam and wait in line AGAIN (like I mentioned, these sweet people take FOREVER), I have two babies in waiting in the car, hopefully not freaking out... I've already been here for much too long, and I'm ready to get the heck out of here! I FINALLY get to meet with someone ( Did I mention that I was the only one in line?!?!) she checks my test, two wrong, look over mistakes, (shouldn't have gotten them wrong). PHEW! We're DONE. Or so I thought. She tells me to go ahead and schedule a time to do the road test... because my LICENSE HAS EXPIRED.(?!??!!?) You're joking. I check the COPY of my license... sure enough. It EXPIRED ON MY BIRTHDAY - 2 and a half WEEKS AGO! You're not joking. I could seriously cry right now.
So... my sister, Steph, comes in just before I take a picture for my Drivers PERMIT. Yes. I have a permit. I can only (legally) drive with a licensed Driver over 21. And I HAVE TO TAKE A STUPID ROAD TEST. (Which I was trying to avoid by getting my State ID). And, go figure, the next available time for a road test isn't until AUGUST 19th. I'm NOT Kidding.
I was telling my mom about it all last night after we came home from dinner... guess what she told me?
"GO BLOG ABOUT IT."
I know. I'm pathetic.
You tell me - IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? Please tell me this is NOT Normal. I've been having some VERY CRAPPY Luck lately. What? Did I not forward one of the stupid emails or something?

I have had days/ weeks where everything goes wrong! I hope things get better soon. That sucks about your license.
i think that things work differently there on kauai, because i had my license expire (it's gotta be an absent-minded-mama thing, because i couldn't believe that i let my license expire, by only a few days, if i recall correctly). anyways, i went into the DMV and told them it expired and i was thinking i would have to take the road test again, that's what my mom told me, so i was a little bit freaked by that, don't know why -- i'm an excellent driver ;-) anyways, the lady just told me i needed to pay like a $10 fine on top of the cost for renewing my license. so it was easier than i thought. i think they made a mistake with you! so i just paid and took a new picture and that was it, i walked out with my new license. that was only 1 or 2 years ago. have they hanged the law since then?? i think not. maybe the worker didn't know what they were doing. i'm sorry. i sympathize with you!
WOW that seriously sounds like something that would happen to me!!!
Poor you Alicia! I can't believe you made it through all that. I love how your mom told you to blog about it hillarious. I wish I was home so I could watch your kids while you go and do that :( Next time just bring a good book...waiting is never an annoyance when there's a good book to read. Hope it turns out well.
